At Willenhall Community Primary School we offer a curriculum which builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills of all pupils, whatever their starting points, as they progress through each Key Stage. The curriculum incorporates the statutory requirements of the new National Curriculum 2014 and other experiences and opportunities which best meet the learning and developmental needs of the pupils in our school.

We place a strong emphasis on developing the core key skills within English, and Maths, while at the same time providing pupils with opportunities to take responsibility for their own learning. We aim to promote a sense of purpose, motivation, enjoyment, enthusiasm, confidence, independence and success through learning.

Specialist teachers deliver PE  in Reception classes, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Music is delivered by a specialist teacher in Key Stage 2.

The curriculum is underpinned by the school’s Values (Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Community and Growth) these are taught on their own and through other areas of the curriculum, including assemblies. The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils and their understanding of the core values of our society are woven through the curriculum.

Developing our pupils’ independence and motivation as unique learners and their sense of responsibility as future citizens is at the heart of all our teaching and learning.

Growth Mindset at Willenhall Community

Having been introduced to the concept of growth mindset, our pupils have participated in a range of activities to learn more about it and try to display a growth mindset in school (and at home). Pupils are taught how their brains work and how new connections are formed when we try new things and practice them, over and over. Pupils have learnt about famous and influential people who have succeeded due to having a growth mindset and not giving up on their goal. We have PSHE lessons and assemblies about growth mindset, but most importantly, teachers and pupils have embraced the language and the way of thinking that promotes using a growth mindset in all lessons.
