Overview

At our school children are given the opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports and physical activities both in and out of school.

As a school we believe a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness.

Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build the character of a child and help embed values such as fairness, teamwork and respect.

School Games Mark

Willenhall Community Primary School has been awarded the School Games Gold Mark. This award is extremely difficult to obtain, involving a huge number of areas, including, amongst others, participation in competition, attendance at extra-curricular clubs, links with local sports clubs and the development of leadership skills with pupils. We are honored to receive this.

KS1

In KS1 children will develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. Children work towards mastering basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, and begin to apply these into a range of activities including participating in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending.

KS2

Children continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make action sequences of movement and be able to use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination. They will develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognize their own success.

KS2 Pupils will develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance through activities such as athletics, dance and gymnastics and compare their performances with previous and demonstrate improvements to achieve their personal best.

We also provide weekly swimming lessons to all children in Year 3, using a local sports center to facilitate this.

Extra Curriculum

As well as PE lessons children throughout the school are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular sporting activities. These include football, tennis, agility, netball, dance, athletics, tag rugby and gymnastics. These sessions are run by our PE department throughout the year giving a large number of pupils the opportunity to take part.

We have made links with Elite Dance Academy who provide dance sessions for our KS1 pupils and CV Life who provide sessions for our KS2 pupils. Other links we have made are with Coventry Rugby Club and Whitley Juniors football club. By making these links it gives the pupils a great opportunity to get involved with clubs outside of school and we hope to inspire them to carry their love of sport with them throughout the rest of their lives.

The School Games
